I never "need" a holiday

And I take a lot of them. Not because I need them but for an enjoyable change of pace and environment. Once I plan a holiday, I anticipate it daily. By the last day of my getaway, I am eager to get back to my home and my work.

The Breakout 23

One of my favorite types of holiday is something I take quite often, even as frequently as a few times per month. I call it Breakout 23, since, from start to finish it takes 23 hours or less. Frequently it begins shortly after noon on Fridays, just after I've completely my client calls for the day. I'll be back home, usually no later than 11 am on Saturday.

You might be thinking, "I might as well just stay at home"

Even though it lasts less than a day, it feels like much more of a break than you imagine. It won't be the same if you take a staycation. The fact that it's overnight and your sleeping place is not your home gives it a whole different feeling.
If you hang out in your home, even though you have permission to do whatever you like, your environment will always be reminding you subtly of all the things that 'could be done." On a Breakout 23 there is "nothing to do" except whatever you make up and nothing around you to remind you of your regular life.

Even if you're just in a different part of the city you live in, it feels like your a tourist when you explore things and interact with the people on the street.

Unless the travel time to-and-from your overnight place-of-stay is an especially rich part of the experience, I recommend you keep the travel time to less than 90 minutes each way.

Although I could easily handle my Breakout by myself, I've asked my assistant Kychuby to join me (until about 4 pm).
Scouting around for a hotel (we took a 3-kilometer Grab ride to an part of DaNang that I was not familiar with), I decide on a hostel. Room, bathroom, TV, and wifi all for $10.50.
This 88-year-old gentleman
insists on thinking that Kychuby
is my girlfriend.
We enjoy a nice chat together.
This 98-year-old woman
is quite friendly and inquisitive.
This family,
from the two-year-old girl
up to her great-grandmother,
enjoy chatting with me.
Kychuby and I enjoy feast
(cost less than $4.00)
I pig out on channel surfing on the TV
and learn about how South Koreans
are losing their belief
that marriage is necessary.
Exploring the area by myself
I enjoying chatting
with some high school students.
After breakfast in the area,
I pack up and catch at Grab
back to my home.
For this Breakout,
it could have been called Breakout 19
since it was more like 19 hours total.
I had a great time
and I'm eager to get back
to all the great things to do in my home.
