Step by Step

"Do the difficult things while they are easy

and do the great things

while they are small.

A journey of a thousand miles

must begin with a single step."

-Lao Tzu

"Inch by inch, life's a cinch.

Yard by yard, life's hard."

-John Bytheway

Why step by step is important

Looking at the big picture is good. Making a grand plan is important. Dreaming the brilliant dream is inspiring. But without the “step by step” these become either hard or impossible.

Step by step, chunk by chunk, can make your goals both doable and enjoyable. Step by step translates from the language of your Next into the language of your Now.

Stepping into step by step

Whenever some goal, some project, even some task occurs as too big or unmanageable, chunk it down, break it up into smaller steps...at a minimum, identify a “next action” that you are able and willing to take.

Example: you dream of writing a great book. Set aside 30 minutes a day to work on the book. The book will finish itself.

Taking care of your Now

Similarly, whenever your Now is resisting some goal, some project, some task because the process doesn’t occur as attractive, chunk it down, break it down into a size where your Now feels, “Okay, I can step into that.”

Example: you want to jog regularly four times a week for two kilometers each time, but your Now doesn’t feel that he or she could enjoy that. However, when considering a jog for a hundred meters on each day, your Now says, “Why not?!”

Later, after doing a hundred meters for a while, your Now might be willing to take on more.

Step by step...

     Gives life some pep...
